Phi Alpha Theta
Our Mission
We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.
Our Chapter
The Lambda Eta chapter at East Carolina University was established May 12, 1966. The Lambda Eta Chapter represents the brightest historians of East Carolina University. Advised by Dr. Helen Dixon the organization focuses on research and presentation of that research at conferences, both local and national. Our chapter has won Chapter of the Year for ten consecutive years. This award is presented to chapters of Phi Alpha Theta across the nation who excel in promoting the mission of Phi Alpha Theta.
Eligibility
To join Phi Alpha Theta’s Lambda Eta Chapter, undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours in History with a minimum GPA of 3.1 in History and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. Note that you do not have to be a history major, as an undergraduate, to join. Rather, you must have a passion for history, and the above course and GPA requirements. Graduate students must have completed a minimum of 9 semester hours towards their Master’s Degree in History, and have a GPA of better than 3.5.

Please contact the Advisor, Dr. Dixon, with any questions at dixonhe19@ecu.edu, and her office is Brewster A-308. Below, you can find a PDF version of the Phi Alpha Theta application. Applications, complete with the $40.00 fee ($30.00 in national dues and $10.00 for local chapter dues) can be paid by cash or check made payable to Phi Alpha Theta, and submitted to Dr. Dixon in person or placed in her mailbox. The fee includes a membership certification, four issues of the Phi Alpha Theta journal, The Historian, a lifetime membership to the national organization, and the annual chapter dues.
