Jarvis L. Hargrove

Jarvis L. Hargrove is an Associate Professor of History and serves as the Co-Director of the African and African American Studies Program. He received his Ph.D. in African history from Howard University in Washington, DC in 2011.  He brings substantial experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Africa, African Diaspora, Atlantic and African American history.  Dr. Hargrove also has numerous publications including: book reviews, journal articles, co-edited articles, a monograph titled The Political Economy of the Interior of the Gold Coast:  The Asante and Era of Legitimate Trade, 1807-1875 and a co-edited volume of essays on the African Diaspora titled Topics in the African Diaspora History.  His published articles and book reviews appear in the Journal of West African History, Journal of Liberian Studies, the Journal of African History, Griot:  The Journal of African American Studies, International Journal of African Historical Studies, Journal of the North Carolina Association of Historians and the Journal of African American History.

While, he has previously published on several topics including, slavery, slave trading, migration, he is currently working a new manuscript, which is an analysis of Ashanti Pioneer/Pioneer Newspaper published in the Gold Coast and Ghana prior to and after independence arrived for the nation.  Dr. Hargrove was a recipient of the Duke University-Mellon Foundation Digital Humanities Fellowship during 2016-2018 academic year.  Prior to coming to East Carolina University, Dr. Hargrove worked in the Department of History at North Carolina Central University.
